As the Florida Woodsmith, I pride myself on becoming the area's premier sawmill services for woodworkers, contractors, and do-it-yourselfers alike. I mill both hardwoods and cedar from an ever changing supply of locally and sustainably sourced logs.
Along with providing lumber cut from my logs, I am happy to take your fallen or service felled trees and process it into quality lumber milled to your specific needs. And with optional services, the more you can do yourself, the lower the price. Milling quality lumber for as little as $1.25 per linear foot.
Do you have a tree scheduled for removal? Have you also dreamed about building benches out of 2 inch slabs? From Shelves to tabletops, to mantles or furniture, that old tree has alot more to offer than just mulch or firewood.

In the interest of reducing costs for our beloved craft, for The Florida Woodsmith I’ve created a system that allows my customers to bring the cost down to a bare minimum, starting with just milling service. Bring me your log and then pickup your green lumber, sticker and dry it yourself after and you'll get a price thats lower than any comparable milling service I've found. Add on services from log pickup service and end sealing service, to lumber delivery service to reduce your workload and still get high quality lumber at a fraction of the cost of buying from the box-stores.
Preparing your log for the mill:
-Cut to length.-
Logs should have a diameter of at least 10 inches at the smaller end and should be cut to standard lumber lengths between 6 & 12 feet. I suggest leaving an extra 6 inches added to account for end checking during the drying process. Logs shorter than 6 foot may not be able to be milled, and my equipment has a max length of 12ft 8in.
-Note: An extra charge may apply if any trimming of logs is required.
-logs under 5ft in length will not be able to be milled.

-logs under 5ft in length will not be able to be milled.
-Seal the ends.-
Immediately after being cut, your log will start to quickly loose moisture from the cut end. This flash drying causes uneven stress due to the varying density of the growth rings, allowing cracks to form radiating out from the pith(exact heart of growth rings). These cracks, also called checks, can form within hours of cutting. To help prevent or minimize these checks, immediately clean any dirt from the cut ends and apply a thick coat of latex paint or end grain sealer to its surface. If you do not have the means to do this yourself, make sure to leave an additional 6 or more inches to the log and I will be happy trim and seal your log for you. Service fees apply.
-Milling your logs-
To build the Florida Woodsmith brand, I will do my best to mill to your exact needs. Many factors will effect how well your needs can be met, however. These factors include, but are not limited to log size, sapwood to heartwood ratio, wood rot, bends in the log, knots, end checking, and foreign or embedded objects.
I have found many things embedded in logs from nails to metal roofing. Dog lead cables, chains, bolts, and field fencing are just a few other examples of potential objects that can be embedded in a tree. Some small objects such as nails can instantly dull a blade rendering it unable to cut. A resharpening fee of $15 per instance will be charged upon hitting any object that causes premature dulling.
Larger objects such as bolts, fencing and cables can break or otherwise destroy a blade. In this situation, a $35 blade fee will be assessed for replacement of broken or permanently damaged blades. In either situation, I will do his best to remove the object before milling will resume. This may cause a reduction in lumber yield, but will help to prevent further damages and fees. Inspecting a log with a simple metal detector can prevent unwanted fees.

-Pickup or delivery-
As always, you may choose to pickup your lumber to keep your price as low as possible. For orders of $500 or more, delivery of green lumber within 15 miles of our milling site is free. For orders under $500, delivery is $30 within the same range. An additional fee of $.50 per mile after the initial 15 is applicable. Upon completion of milling, an email notification will be sent either stating that your order is ready for pickup, or to arrange a time for delivery. Please have an area prepped that is under a roof or otherwise protected from rain and direct sunlight. This area should have enough room on all sides for adequate airflow. For stacking and unloading, hourly rates may apply.
-Drying-
Drying quality lumber can be a long and tricky process but The Florida Woodsmith is here to help in many ways. I will happily walk you through the process of stacking and drying your lumber to help you achieve the best yield.
Stickering is the process of separating rows of lumber using small spacers (stickers) to allow enough airflow to dry all boards evenly. Along with answering any questions you may have, I also offers a wide array of products to help you dry your lumber properly from stickers to stack pallets. A Helpful Tip:For more than 100yrs, borax has been the secret weapon of sawmills around the world.
Mix about one pound to one gallon of water and brush or roll it on slabs set out to season. You want the solutions to penetrate thoroughly. Boric acid has anti-fungal, and insecticidal properties. This mixture is especially helpful when dealing with spalted slabs or when the log has sat on the ground for extended lengths of time. |
